James 3:14-16 King James Version (KJV)
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

Strife - struggle; selfishness; to be superior either by intellectual or physical effort; exertion in anger or enmity; self-seeking pursuit by unfair means;

Instead of strife several other versions use selfish ambition. The New King James says self-seeking. In life we are faced with a choice. I can do it my way or I can do it God's way. If I do it my way. If I am self-seeking. If I am in strife with my family, friends, co-workers, boss, or anybody else then you have stopped doing it God's way.

Jesus said the greatest commandment is love God and love your neighbor. Now this was not God's greatest suggestion. This is the greatest commandment. God is trying to teach us how to walk in love. Jesus died on the cross to demonstrate God's love for us (Romans 5:8-10). God is commanding us to release the love He put into our hearts:

Romans 5:5 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
5 ...the love of God has been poured out within our hearts...

Activate the love of God that is in you by:

  1. Prayer
  2. Reading and Thinking about the Word of God.

Pursue love and strife/selfishness will disappear.

Speak the Word: Father, I will not be in strife. I am not self seeking. I walk in love. I pray for those that are not easy to get along with. I am doing what the Word of God tells me to do.
