The Lord as Our Keeper.

I thank You, Lord, that the person who obeys You lives a charmed life. A charmed life for a disciple means a protected life. So complete is that protection that my life is safe even in the hands of the enemy. "He who ... surrenders to the Chaldeans [the enemy] ... shall have his life as a prize of war" (Jeremiah 21:9, Berkeley). God's protection means that my life is off limits to everyone but Him.
God delivered Job into satan's hands, but with this proviso. "Spare his life" (Job 2:6, Berkeley). The protecting hedge of God's person came between Job and satan so the evil one could not destroy him. In a sense this is functional immortality. The obedient disciple lives under the shadow of life, not death, regardless of his circumstances or dangers. Nothing can touch him, much less take him! Only when God determines that his earthly course is finished does he then cross over into the shadow of death, and even there, "Thou art with me" (Psalm 23:4).
In another sense, my life is the inner citadel of my being, the real me, and God's protection extends there also. "He shall preserve thy soul" (Psalm 121:7, KJV). That kind of protection is eternal; even death does not touch it. The disciple's body may be attacked, his mind and heart may suffer distress, but God will throw in every reinforcement He has to keep the citadel from falling. That is because the Lord is my keeper, the One responsible to His own Word to deliver my soul safely forever.
The keeping power of God means I can live free from apprehension, though I must never live free from responsibility. When fear threatens my tranquillity, I say, "When I am afraid, I will put my trust in Thee" (Psalm 56:3). *AMEN*

*Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows" (Luke 12:7). *AMEN*
