I met a man once in Europe who tried to convince me that going to church was unnecessary to him because he had always lived a righteous and sinless life. He went further to tell me how unimportant it is to assemble with some people all in the name of God. If he needed God, he would just stay in a place by himself alone and call on God, and God had always answered him, he asserted. But one day I found that this man with all his "righteousness" was caught in an unspeakable mess. However, this is not to say that going to church will make one live a mess-free life. Oh no! Some church folks still make a terrible mess.

As I have earlier stated, prayer and fasting are married, together for life, and they can never divorce. The kind of fasting I mentioned goes beyond abstinence from food alone. I got stirred up by the first verse of a message of our Lord Jesus Christ on the mountain, known as the Beatitudes. It states thus, "And seeing the multitudes, HE (Christ) went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him" (Matt. 5:1). The teachings loaded into the entire chapter show that the disciples would have missed a lot if they had failed to know when the Lord "was set" ("seated" according to an Amplified Bible).

The Bible teaches us that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19,20) and that we are to be living sacrifices to the Lord (Romans 12:1). In order for these transformations to occur, we must first recognize that subduing our flesh is a constant, daily process because it is a spiritual battle. Just when the believer feels confident that he has overcome an area of temptation in his life, he may come face to face with that very issue all over again and not triumph over it, but rather fall into the temptation. We are exhorted in 1 Corinthians 10:12, "Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall." Why are there areas in a believer's life that seem to be a constant struggle to overcome and what can he do about truly being free of them?

This subject, from my experience in the ministry, is considered the bedrock of power to the church. While some in the school of thought with me believe that both prayer and fasting are essential tools to disarm, disorganize and dismantle the kingdom of darkness, some believe in prayer alone. I know of some believers who can fast very well but will forget to either pray or pray a little. Some will not even bother to pray. What an interesting community! Howbeit, I shall endeavor in this subject to x-ray some merits and demerits of prayer with fasting, as well as fasting without prayer and vice versa.

Our Lord Jesus knowing that the question mirrored the minds of all His followers, answered, "Verily I say unto you, that ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of His glory, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel." Furthermore, "Everyone that hath forsaken houses or brethren or sisters or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake shall receive an hundred fold, and shall inherit everlasting life." (Matt. 19:27-29).

We can WIN over our flesh! We do not have to be subject to every whim and desire but we can learn how to master our flesh and be everything God has called us to be.
