Deuteronomy 30:19-20 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

19 "I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,

20 by loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them."

"Love God", "Obey God", "Cleave to God" are the keys to living an abundant, satisfying, long life. I just heard a great example of someone that practiced these three that I wanted to share with you.

My friend has 5 children and a year ago he injured his knee. His job requires him to lift and carry packages so an injured knee means that he can not go to work. In the last year, he has been through two surgeries and he is currently going through physical therapy. The doctors said from the last surgery that the recovery would take 6 months to a year before he would be at 100%. Disability only pays a portion of his regular salary. With 5 kids the finances have been very tight. It has been difficult for them to pay all of their bills.

A few weeks ago, the transmission in their only car went out. The repair bill was more than they could pay and they needed transportation. Several friends helped by loaning them transportation. Then somebody gave them $100 to help them get the transmission fixed. $100 was not enough to cover the whole bill. They felt like God wanted them to sow the $100 into somebody. At first, they were hesitant, but they obeyed God and sowed the $100.

A few weeks later they got a call from their mechanic. He said, "Somebody has paid for your transmission to be fixed, plus they have also paid to have the Air Conditioning in your car be repaired." In the Texas summers with 5 kids Air Conditioning becomes pretty important. Then somebody else blessed them with another vehicle. They ended up with two vehicles instead of just one. Now that's a testimony to the faithfulness of God!

I want you to notice that they "Loved God", "Obeyed God", and "Cleaved to God". They "Loved God" when they gave the $100 although they had a great need themselves. That is an act of love towards God. They "Obeyed God" in that they did what they believed God had told them to do even when it was not easy to obey. They "Cleaved to God" in the sense that they trusted God more than they did the natural instinct to cleave to the $100 they so desperately needed. They put their trust in God rather than the money. So, follow their example and "Love God", "Obey God", and "Cleave to God".

Speak the Word: Father, I know that you will work out all things for my good. Therefore I love you, I obey you, and I cleave to you.
