Galatians 5:22-23 Amplified Bible (AMP)
22 But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness,

23 Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge].

The Holy Spirit is inside of us to do a job. He has the job of producing fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Gentleness, and self-control.

Let's take a look at love for a moment. Do you always walk in love? If someone at work or school says something nasty and hurts you, what do you normally do? Most people do not respond in love. They strike back. When you are in that situation you have a choice. You can yield to the Holy Spirit or you can resist Him. You can follow the flesh or you can follow the Spirit.

Now take a look at what happens when someone hurts you. Your flesh has an immediate reaction. It is like a reflex. Like when the doctor strikes your knee to check your reflexes. Your flesh will react to protect itself. Love on the other hand does not react that way. Love is kind and gentle. Love is not self-seeking. Love will bear up under anything. Love is not rude, boastful, or vainglorious. Love does not insist on it's own rights or on it's own way.

So how do you stop this reflex action and replace it with the fruit of the Spirit. You have to stop and listen to the Holy Spirit. There are a lot of different ways you can stop to listen to the Holy Spirit.

  • Take a moment to pray
  • Go for a walk
  • Take a nap
  • Count to 10

Basically you are trying to give the situation a little time. This way you can cool off and hear from God.

Speak the Word: Father, I yield to the Holy Spirit. I yield to love, joy, peace, longsuffering (patience), gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. I will allow the Holy Spirit to work through my life and cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in me.
