John 13:34 New International Version (NIV)
34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

We are looking at what Jesus said just before he was went to the cross. Yesterday we saw how Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. Now Jesus is giving them a new commandment. A commandment to love one another.

The cross was the ultimate act of love. Jesus went to the cross so that our sins would be forgiven. He bore the punishment we deserved so that we would not be judged. Do you ever think about that? If Jesus had not gone to the cross we would have been in hell. The sins you and I have committed would have landed us there. Do not take that lightly. We have a lot to be thankful for.

The cross the greatest act of love and it is the place where we were forgiven. The blood of Jesus paid for our sins. We have been commanded to love others as Jesus loved us. We have been commanded to give our lives for others and to forgive others. Forgiveness is an act of love.

Jesus did not wait until we deserved forgiveness. If He had we would have never been forgiven. We need to do the same. Don't wait to forgive. They will never deserve it. Forgive others because the love of Christ (the one who removes burdens and the power to remove burdens) compels you. Let the love of Jesus control you and cause you to forgive those who have hurt you. Don't hold it back. Give what was freely given to you. Give the love Jesus has given you.

Speak the Word: Father, thank you for your love and forgiveness. I love others as you have loved me and I forgive those that have wronged me.
