John 13:1 New International Version (NIV)
1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.

If you knew that these were your last hours what would you do? Who would you talk to? What would you tell them? If these were your last hours you would make them count. You would say what was most important. You would give your best because it would be your last. John 13 to 17 records what Jesus said at the Passover meal. It was his last opportunity to impart something into his disciples before he went to the cross.

John 13:2-5 New International Version (NIV)
2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Jesus used his last moments on earth to teach the disciples about love. Even though Jesus was God he did not demand to be worshipped as God. Jesus came to serve.

Matthew 22:36-40 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?"

37 And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'

38 "This is the great and foremost commandment.

39 "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'

40 "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."

Jesus did not come to demand we keep God's commandments. Jesus came to demonstrate God's commands. He showed us how to walk in love, how to love God and how to love our neighbor. Jesus came to show us how to live and how to love.

Speak the Word: Father, Jesus came to serve. I serve you with all of my mind, heart, and strength.
