Ask this person over for dinner or someplace where you can open up and explain your issues with them. Let them know that you have some suggestions or opinions about change that you want to get their opinion about before making a decison to act. I'm sure that they will appreciate your willingness to at least get a second opinion before proceeding into unfamiliar or potentially adverse territory.
