Romans 8:5-6 New International Version (NIV) 5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;
What is your mind set on? Do you desire things of the sinful nature (what I want) or do you desire things of the spirit (Love)? Your desires are a result of exposure or meditation. Those things that you see, hear, touch, smell, and think about will form your desires. The more you see, hear, touch, smell, and think on something the greater your desire for it.
You walk through the front door and the aroma of dinner tantalizes your taste buds. You have a desire for dinner. You see your spouse, whom you have been thinking about all day long. You will desire your spouse. What you expose yourself to will become what you desire. The more you expose yourself to the sinful nature (what I want) the greater your desire will be. The more you expose yourself to Spirit of God (love) the more you will desire the things of God.
A mind focused on the sinful or selfish nature will lead to death. Spiritual death is separation from God. We know that God is light, life, love, joy, peace, patience, etc. When you are separated from God instead of light you have darkness, for life you have death, for love you have hate, for joy you have sorrow, for peace you are broken, for patience you have impatience. A mind focused on the sinful nature is a life of hardship.
A mind focused on the Spirit will have life and peace. The word life in this sentence comes from the Greek word "Zoe". It means to have the God kind of life a life that is full, complete, and satisfying. You have heard the song "I can't get no satisfaction". They cannot find satisfaction because they do not have "Zoe".
Peace has to do with "nothing missing, nothing broken". Peace is when you have everything that belongs to you. Peace is having great relationships, health, and wealth. Peace is when life is as God intended it to be. Peace is having heaven on earth.
Speak the Word: Father I set my mind on things of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, faithfulness. I have the God kind of life. A life where nothing is missing and nothing is broken.
