Isaiah 58:6 King James Version (KJV)

6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen?

to loose the bands of wickedness,

to undo the heavy burdens,

and to let the oppressed go free,

and that ye break every yoke?

A fast will do 4 things for you - loose the bands of wickedness, undo heavy burdens, let the oppressed go free, and break yokes.

A band of wickedness is like you have no control over a particular sin. The sin appears to be controlling you. Fasting can help you get loosed from a band of wickedness.

Heavy burdens are things that just seem like they are too big to handle. I can't deal with that because it is too big. Fasting will undo your heavy burdens.

Oppression is long term and has the intent to crush or destroy you. Fasting can help you get free from oppression.

A yoke is a relationship between two people (2 Cor 6:13). Relationships can bring you closer to God or they can take you away from God. Fasting will help you learn how to deal with relationships that are taking you away from God. In some cases you may find that you need to break off the relationship.

What should you fast?

Daniel 10:3 Amplified Bible (AMP)
3 I ate no pleasant or desirable food, nor did any meat or wine come into my mouth; and I did not anoint myself at all for the full three weeks.

Fasting does not have to be a "no food" diet. You could fast desert, or certain foods you enjoy. You could fast entertainment, or TV. Whatever you choose to fast use the extra time for God. If you save money by this fast then use it for God's work.

God will respond to your fast. But He may do it in a way you did not expect. You may find the issue simply goes away. God may give you an idea or a vision that answers the issue. He may send somebody to you. The answer may not be obvious and it may take some time. The important thing is get started today and let God loose the bands of wickedness, undo the heavy burdens, set the oppressed free, and break every yoke in your life.

Speak the Word: Father, I see how a fast can change my life. Please show me what I should do. Should I fast? If so what should I fast, for how long, and how should I serve you with it?
